Dry Cleaning vs Wash & Fold vs Steam Ironing: Which Does Your Wardrobe Need?

Urban Laundry📅 Updated June 2026⏱ 6 min read

Wash & fold, wash & iron, dry cleaning, steam ironing — if you've ever stood at a laundry counter unsure which one your clothes actually need, you're not alone. Here's a simple guide to matching each service to the right garment, so you protect your clothes and don't pay for more than you need.

The four services, in plain terms

Wash & Fold

Your clothes are machine-washed, dried and neatly folded. This is the workhorse service for everyday wear — t-shirts, casual cottons, innerwear, towels and bedsheets. It's charged per kg, which makes it the most economical option for routine laundry.

Wash & Iron

The same as wash & fold, but each garment is pressed afterwards so it's ready to wear straight off the hanger. Ideal for office shirts, formal trousers, kurtas and anything you want crisp.

Only Ironing / Steam Press

Just pressing, no washing — for clothes that are already clean but creased from storage or drying. The most affordable service of all, charged per piece.

Dry Cleaning

A water-free process that uses a gentle liquid solvent instead of water and detergent. It's designed for fabrics and garments that water can damage or distort — suits, silk, wool, heavy embroidery and structured pieces.

Which service does each garment need?

Rule of thumb: Always read the care label first. A crossed-out wash tub symbol means "dry clean only" — don't risk it in a washing machine. When in doubt, ask, or choose dry cleaning for anything expensive or delicate.

Dry cleaning vs washing: what's the real difference?

Washing uses water and detergent, which is excellent for most cottons and synthetics but can shrink wool, fade dyes and distort tailored shapes. Dry cleaning uses a solvent that lifts oil-based stains and cleans without soaking the fabric, so delicate fibres keep their shape, colour and finish. Neither is "better" overall — they're suited to different garments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between dry cleaning and wash & fold?
Wash & fold machine-washes garments in water and detergent, then dries and folds them - ideal for everyday clothes. Dry cleaning uses a water-free solvent for delicate or structured items like suits, silk and wool that water could shrink, fade or distort.
Should I dry clean or wash my silk saree?
Silk sarees should be dry cleaned. Silk is delicate and prone to colour bleeding and water spotting, so a solvent-based dry clean protects the fabric, colours and any zari or embroidery far better than machine washing.
Is wash & iron the same as dry cleaning?
No. Wash & iron washes garments in water and then presses them, while dry cleaning cleans without water using a solvent. Wash & iron suits everyday shirts and trousers; dry cleaning is for delicate and tailored garments.
When do I just need ironing instead of washing?
Choose only-ironing when clothes are already clean but creased - for example after long storage, travel, or line drying. It's the most affordable service since there's no washing involved.
How do I know if a garment is dry clean only?
Check the care label. A crossed-out wash tub symbol, or the words 'dry clean only', means it should not go in a washing machine. If the label is missing or unclear, choose dry cleaning for anything delicate or expensive.
